Lt Gardes’s body has been prepared, and is ready to be sent home to next-of-kin. Everyone has shown up again to see her off.

There will be another memorial service tonight, but for now the mood is rather sombre.

I brought Major Merrywhiskers, and she’s mewing in confusion, poor thing. I think Lt Beargal has taken over care for Lt Gardes’s possum.

I might be somewhat drunk. Major Murri- Mur- Merrsh- my kitten is exploring my cubbeards. Can there- could we- mouse?

My glass of water is empty.

The American base finished construction of their Foxtrot during the night, and have begun work on a Hunter.

I’ve started drawing plans for a dedicated interceptor base in Europe. It’s all we can afford to maintain right now. We might be able to expand it with time. And we might need to station some security personnel on the base. But no Charlie to begin with. That will have to come later.

Just a couple of hangars and two Condors, mainly. I will consider whether a workshop is needed.

I wonder if we’ll be able to go on any more fishing trips or other excursions before this invasion is over. Maybe if we could determine some sort of pattern in their behaviour? So we’d know roughly how much time we have after we’ve dealt with a round of UFOs.

Major Merrywhiskers and I are inspecting the workshop. Work on the laser sniper rifle is coming along nicely. The one intended for Lt Gardes… Major Merrywhiskers tried to make off with a spanner.

Our new replacement has arrived. Pvt Lobo Malo. Seems like a decent enough fellow. I’ll give him a place on Charlie-1 so we can see what he can do.

The laser sniper rifle is complete, though the chief insists we call it a ‘precision laser’. I’m not going to do that, but it was interesting to see the chief of research set foot in the workshop, even if it was only to make sure they’d put the rifle together correctly.

I am reminded that the laser weapons can’t fire as many shots before they run out of energy as a standard weapon would have bullets. This rifle can only fire six shots before needing to be recharged. The unified batteries could be interesting, though.

I asked the engineers to start construction on a prototype laser rifle. Cpl Berwolf will be testing out the laser sniper on our next mission.

Cpl Berwolf is taking the laser sniper to the firing range before noon. That should be interesting.

The fire has been put out. In hindsight we should have realised that firing a concentrated beam of heat energy at a paper target would likely cause it to combust.

The engineers are working on making up some better targets from sandbags. We will try again in a couple of hours.

Cpl Berwolf needed some time to adjust to the extra weight of the weapon, but once that was done, she seemed satisfied with its performance.

31st of October, 1979, 07:32

The council will be delivering their report at midnight tonight. In spite of our early trouble, I think this meeting should go better than the last one, and hopefully we’ll get enough funds to start construction of the Euro-African base.

1st of November, 1979, 00:25

Okay, maybe not that old.

Very serious old men.

Okay, we did receive an overall increase, though we’re still a little short of our starting level. Funds this month are going to be tight. Even so, I have ordered them to start construction. We’ll just have to do what we can.

The American base has finished its Hunter car, and I granted them enough funds to start making some Jackal armours. We can really only afford to make them for half the team for now, but it’s better than nothing.

1st of November, 1979, 09:54

“Contact, sir! Confirmed extraterrestrial contact!”

Well, that didn’t take them long. Very close to us, as well… I have a bad feeling about this. Seems to still be Scout class, so they haven’t upped the stakes even further yet.

“Launch Foxtrot-1! Intercept course!”

“Yes sir!”

We have drawn up new strategies, and our Foxtrots should do the job. Now to see what happens to the rest of the world while we chase this one.

There’s another one in the US. Foxtrot-2 has been launched. That didn’t take long at all.

Our new tactics were a success. The American UFO is down and Charlie-2 is heading out. Let’s hope Foxtrot-1 meets with equal success.

1st of November, 1979, 11:06

Asian UFO is down.

“Launch Charlie-1! Set course for the crash site!”

“Yes sir!”

I look at the time. Both ground teams are going to have to engage at night. This could be a catastrophe in the making.

1st of November, 1979, 13:08

Charlie-2 has reached their crash site. Dawn is only a couple of hours away, but neither I nor Commander Dosjevsky are comfortable with waiting. The aliens went down close to a populated area, so a couple of hours could give them time for all sorts of mischief.

Charlie-2 is setting down.

Charlie-2 Response Team on the ground. Night-time mission. Flares have been distributed. Weapons at the ready. Dropship doors opening.

Another industrial lot to explore. At least there will be a lot of street-lights around.

We quickly scurry out of the dropship and secure the area around it.

That container looks sketchy, though.

Only a security guard.

Cpl Vecre and Pvt DeHaan head over to the security guard and ask him for information. We are informed that the UFO hit the ground on the other side of the warehouse north of us, almost knocking it down.

Sgt NotSoGrump takes Cpls Angnor and Sumanai, and advance straight towards the warehouse. She tells Cpl Vecre and Pvt DeHaan to keep heading up the road, while Cpls Havoc, Madwater and Sibana are told to head through the parking lot towards the office building.

The three groups start slowly advancing while throwing flares ahead of them.

Cpl Angnor is taking point towards the warehouse door when it’s suddenly pushed open. A lizard is standing there, seeming a little surprised at seeing three armed humans looking at it.

Cpl Angnor fires first, causing the lizard to stumble, but it’s Sgt NotSoGrump who finishes it off.

Like a chump.

That was your own fault for just standing there.

They follow up by throwing a few flares into the warehouse, but they can’t spot anything else.

Cpl Vecre and Pvt DeHaan aren’t seeing anything, and neither is Cpl Havoc’s group.

It’s slow progress with the need for flares, but we’re securing the area bit by bit.

As Sgt NotSoGrump and Cpls Angnor and Sumanai file into the warehouse, they spot another lizard hiding against the eastern wall.

Unfortunately there are too many boxes in the way to get a good shot, but the lizard comes charging at them, weaving between the boxes to make itself harder to hit.

Cpl Angnor still manages to hit it with half a shotgun shell, so it seems to change its mind and bursts out the side-door instead. Where it promptly gets shot dead by the security guard, to all our surprise.

Neither did the lizard.

Didn’t see that coming.

After making sure the rest of the warehouse is clear, Sgt NotSoGrump arranges Cpls Angnor and Sumanai in a formation close, but not too close, to the UFO door to guard it. Now to wait for the others to secure the area before they go in.

On their approach towards the office building, Cpl Sibana spots a lizard poking its head up through a window. She takes a shot and manages to hit it, so it comes charging out.

Cpl Havoc puts her shield up, and Cpl Madwater takes cover behind her, trying to shoot the lizard as it comes charging.

It doesn’t seem interested in facing us head-on though, and takes a potshot before it heads behind the concrete wall to our left, so Cpl Madwater swings around the corner and blasts it before it manages to get away, or whatever it was trying to do.


Enemy down.

We sweep around and inside the building, but no more aliens can be spotted.

Cpl Vecre and Pvt DeHaan find nothing either, so everyone converges on the UFO.

As they’ve been waiting, Sgt NotSoGrump’s group have seen the UFO door open several times, and even taken potshots at the lizards inside, but no big hits have happened.

Cpl Vecre takes position outside the warehouse, and is quickly joined by Cpls Havoc and Madwater. Cpls DeHaan and Sibana head inside the warehouse. With two firing teams lined up, we wait for the inevitable.

The door opens, and Sgt NotSoGrump immediately fires a burst that takes one of the aliens down, and Cpls Madwater and Vecre take out another.

Cpls Angnor and Sumanai take out the one in the middle, and Cpl Sibana takes the one far in the back with Sgt NotSoGrump’s support.

Just like the goth punks in the world. :P

It’s dead on the inside.

The smoke clears and we start moving inside. Any shots they got off flew wild, so we just need to make sure the one that’s probably in the back won’t get out.

It tries, but just about everyone fires on the door when it opens, so it doesn’t even make it into the room.

After a final sweep, we get the name of the security guard. Maybe he could be a future recruit.

Charlie-2 heads home.

Things go so much better for us.

I kinda want all missions to be lizards now.

1st of November, 1979, 13:46

Charlie-2 reports no injuries, and half of me manages to relax. Maybe Charlie-1 will do just as well, but if they meet the grey aliens again, or something new, I don’t know what will happen.

I can only wait.

1st of November, 1979, 15:09

“Charlie-1 has reached the crash site, sir!”

“Understood. Have them set down and engage.”

“Yes sir!”

Charlie-1 Response Team on the ground. Night-time mission. Flares have been distributed. Weapons at the ready. Dropship doors opening.

We are back in the tundra, and there should be a Soviet outpost west of here. But let’s secure the dropship first.

Sgt Volatar and Pvt Malo check the side doors, while Lt Cuftbert is first off the back ramp and throws a couple of flares.

You're looking ugly today.

Hello there.

The rest of the team comes down the ramp and start taking shots at the lizard, but it retreats out of view behind some trees.

Cpt Riddium attempts to fire at the trees, but the rocket goes slightly off-target.

He tells the five others to hunt it down, while he takes Sgt Volatar and Pvt Malo and heads west towards the outpost. We need to pinpoint where the UFO came down, after all.

The alien is hopping between the trees, and the group try to take it down, but only graze it a few times.

Between them, Sgts Herr and Niña corner it against the frozen lake and take it down.

Maybe a little further up?

Now to find that UFO.

Cpt Riddium and his group get to the outpost, and spot an alien that quickly runs behind a building out of sight. There also seems to be a large outline a little further into the darkness.



Sure enough, we scoot up a little further and the outline of the UFO becomes clearer.

We are worried that the alien might have taken refuge in the building, and don’t want to get shot in the back, so we move really slowly towards the building as we wait for Lt Cuftbert’s group to come around to us.

The lizard comes out from behind the building again and ducks between some rocks, but Lt Cuftbert’s group are in a good position to shoot between those rocks.

Sgt Squirrel and Cpl Berwolf flush it out with heavy wounds, and Sgt Herr puts it down with a well-placed pistol shot.

Has killed more aliens than killer sharks.

Killer Medic.

We suddenly hear an alien plasma rifle fire and a human death scream. Sgt Volatar and Pvt Malo get around the building in time to see a lizard come from the storehouse and into the living quarters.

They guard the door, but the alien decides to come out the other side instead. Unfortunately for it, Sgt Niña is just outside.

Good work, Justin.

No escape.

We make sure both buildings are clear as we start assembling outside the UFO door. We know the score by now. If we wait a few minutes, they will open the door to look outside.

The first time it happens, Sgts Niña and Squirrel put one of them down.

You failed.

You tried.

A second alien tries to shoot back, but misses entirely.

As the door closes again, the rest move into position and wait to see if the aliens try again.

They apparently don’t, so Sgt Herr opens the door and quickly steps out of the way before something tries to shoot him.

There are two aliens in there now, and Cpl Berwolf can see one of them trying to hide.

Animation didn't work right.

Laser go!

It goes down in one shot.

The rest of the team try to hit the second alien, but it’s found too good cover. It does get flushed out and moves to another cover, where Lt Cuftbert gets a line.

A flurry of shots fly out and destroys half the cover and sprays some alien blood around, but it’s Cpl Berwolf’s laser sniper that puts this one down too.

I wonder what sort of dust is made from the alien alloys.

Another one bites the dust.

We move into the UFO with anyone who has short-range weapons, and the final alien comes storming out from the back.

Sgt Niña stops it.

We inform the surviving civilians that it’s safe now, and head home on Charlie-1.

It says Riddium is injured, because I sent him out that way. He was *mostly* healed up.

I was luckier than I deserved today.

Charlie-1 is in the air again, and they also report no injuries, though one civilian was killed.

Still, good work, people.

Charlie-2 has landed. The report should be along in an hour or two, so I will probably read that before Charlie-1 is home.

Apparently something is performing strafing runs down in Australia and the Indian ocean. That’s new… I would send Foxtrot-1, but I don’t know exactly where.

1st of November, 1979, 18:15

The USS Detroit II in the Indian ocean reports an attack from a UFO. I have launched Foxtrot-1 to see if their radar can pick it up.

1st of November, 1979, 20:12

Charlie-1 has landed. Foxtrot-1 is still enroute.

I congratulate the soldiers on the mission, and ask Cpl Berwolf about the field performance of the new weapon. She admits that even with the target practice, it took a little getting used to, but after a couple of shots she felt she had it figured out. The lizards’ hide isn’t thick enough to withstand a laser blast.

As I look over both mission reports later, the next round of promotions are clear. From Charlie-2, with Commander Dosjevsky recommendation; Sgt NotSoGrump is now a Lieutenant, and has earned the Order of Gallantry, Cpls Havoc, Madwater, Sibana, Sumanai and Vecre are now Sergeants, and Pvt DeHaan is now a Corporal. From Charlie-1; Sgts Herr, Niña, Squirrel and Volatar are now Lieutenants, and Pvt Malo is now a Corporal.

Foxtrot-1 has found something. It’s… big. Bigger than anything we’ve encountered so far. And I have to assume it’s heavily armed.

“Tell Foxtrot-1 to adjust course to intercept. Let’s get a closer look.”

“Yes sir!”
