[A/N: It’s now a little more than a year since I started writing fiction on the regular, and at the time I didn’t really pay attention to birthdays of the Aqours girls, or anyone else for that matter. But this year I am aware that we have reached Watanabe You’s birthday, so! A story! I feel like I could have done better, but I’ve had some issues focusing. That happens sometimes, and there’s not a lot to do about it. In the end I just decided I wanted to post something.
As for the pairing, I decided that via poll. I put up two polls on Twitter, but to keep it kinda random, I didn’t say what the options were for. I had one ship ready for each possible combination, but I maybe should have foreseen that when given three options, people would naturally gravitate towards the middle one. So in the 1-2-3 poll, 2 won handily, and in the A-B-C poll, B won, though it was a much closer call. And 2B was YouRiko. See, the first poll was to decide the year, and the second was listing the names alphabetically. So for example 1A would have been YouMaru, and 3C YouMari. 2C was reserved for Chika/Riko/You, since shipping You with herself, or doing her solo, wasn’t something I wanted in either case.
Making it adult life was simply because that fit better with the idea that came to me. Anyway! In spite of my scatterbrained state, I hope it’s still okay.]
The door smacked close behind a dripping Watanabe You.
“I’m home,” she said in a miserable tone as she peeled her jacket off. The forecast had said it would only be partly cloudy today, but the cloud that had passed over this area had opened itself up, and unloaded upon the populace.
“Welcome back,” said a voice from further inside.
You walked slowly towards the living room as she peeled off more layers of wet clothing.
“Oh wow, it really came down that hard?” Riko commented as the soaked You came into sight.
[A/N: Had this silly idea after seeing a piece of Love Live Sunshine fanart with You in glasses yesterday. It’s a very powerful image.]
Takami Chika hopped into the classroom, feeling victorious. She had nearly missed the bus, but she had made it to school in good time. Surely the sign of a better time being ahead of her! Speaking of a better time, among the handful of others already here was the lovely Watanabe You, who looked a little extra lovely today.
“Good morning, You-chan!” Chika called out as she made her way over.
You looked up. “Oh, morning, Chika-chan!” She grinned with utter brilliance, and for once she was wearing her glasses. Actually, it looked like she had gotten a new frame for them, all red and stylish.
“Special day?” Chika asked as she took her seat.
[A/N: Back to Love Live Sunshine, I had a silly little idea based on how I keep saying “Watanabe You is a very pretty girl”. She really is, but I imagine she wouldn’t think so herself. So why not have your two girlfriends try to convince you? And I know Riko is usually very secretive about her GL lit, but I like relationships where people are comfortable being open about such things. I like to think these three have reached that stage.]
Watanabe You felt very content with the current state of her life. It was cold outside, so she, Chika, and Riko had gathered at You’s place. They were ostensibly there to study, but as soon as they had gotten under the soothing warmth of the kotatsu those plans had fallen apart.
You was half-asleep gazing the same page in the book she had been from the start, Riko had brought out her own literature, and Chika… glancing across the table, You noticed that Chika was just looking at her. Maybe one could even call it staring.
[A/N: So we return to more Love Live Sunshine this time. This idea I actually had a burning desire to get started with, someone recently realising their polyamorous feelings, and trying to figure out how to deal with that, but I struggled with it as it went along. I’m not entirely happy with it, but I spent several days going between working on this, procrastinating, and doing nothing else useful, so I at least want to show something for it. I think it’s decent overall, and there’s certainly bits in here I love, but it doesn’t feel like my strongest effort. I was almost tempted to scrap it, but at this point I’d hate discarding this amount of work more than I’d hate posting something I think could be better. Maybe it’s the best I can hope for in the middle of winter. I don’t have the same energy levels and patience as I do the rest of the year.]
Watanabe You was nervous. She was currently in the room with the two most important people in her life, and for some reason her heart seemed to be even harder to calm down than usual today. Something had awakened inside her recently, and it was getting increasingly tough to deal with.
She loved Chika. Her dear childhood friend, who had always been there for her, with whom she had shared so much. The wonderful girl who shone like the sun every time she smiled. Who could sometimes feel so lonely and frustrated because she didn’t want to bother other people with her problems. Because she was head-strong, determined, and kept having to be reminded that it was okay to ask for help. You had always admired Chika.
And she had always loved Chika. But had she always loved loved Chika? She didn’t have a good answer for that.
[A/N: For the second of this year’s Christmas stories (which is technically happening post-Christmas), we are revisiting Ruby and Leah from Love Live Sunshine. I wanted to get episode 9 watched before I started this one, and now that that’s done, let’s see what we can do about this. Post-completion: Okay, that became a lot longer than I expected it would. Proof-reading this wasn’t easy, but I’m fairly happy with it.]
Getting the permission for this hadn’t been easy, but Ruby had done her very rubesty. Convincing Dia had been the hard part. Getting Mari to lend her the money for the ticket had been fairly easy. Mari seemed very supportive of Ruby going to see Leah, and had even helped talk to Dia. Ruby wasn’t sure how long it would take her to repay all of that, but she was certain it would be worth it.
She was going to stay with Leah in Hakodate for New Year’s. Of course she felt bad about asking for that after they had just come back from the Christmas concert they did, but she wanted this more than anything else in the world right now. Even more than winning Love Live. If she missed this opportunity, she’d have to wait a whole year for her next chance. It meant missing most of Dia’s birthday for the first time ever, but she told herself that was going to happen sooner or later anyway.
[A/N: I’ve been pondering this idea for a couple of days, but after the latest LL Sunshine episode I felt the urgent need to start writing it down. I don’t think I’ve written any YohaRiko before this? I can’t remember. I think it’s a cute ship, though.]
It was a nice, quiet day, and Riko had found herself a secluded spot to do some reading. It was getting a little colder these days, so she was wearing a jacket and a scarf, but it wasn’t otherwise unpleasant to sit outside. She was sheltered from the wind in her little nook, as well.
“Hey. Whatcha doing?”
Riko quickly slapped the magazine together, and turned to look towards the voice. Only to see a certain fallen angel leaning on top of the wall she was sitting against. A lollipop stick was coming out of the corner of her mouth.
“Oh, it’s just you,” Riko said. She relaxed, went back to her previous position, and opened her magazine again.
[A/N: I have this small ball of seeds of ideas roughly falling under the label of ‘Hanamaru is too gay for this’, and one of them sprouted into this.]
“Y-You-san?” Hanamaru wasn’t sure how she had ended up on the floor, or how You had ended up on top of her. But those blue eyes were gazing down at her very intently.
“I’ve been thinking about you for a long time, Hanamaru-chan.” You’s voice was huskier than Hanamaru was used to, and the fingers caressing her scalp was making her shiver.
“You-san…” Hanamaru wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but then You started leaning down towards her. She closed her eyes, and just as she could sense You’s closeness…
Hanamaru woke up.
[A/N: Another middle of the night idea. I don’t usually write these types of stories, but I suppose I wanted to see if I could.]
She’s beautiful. The most beautiful person in the world. That’s what I think every time I see her.
Graceful, talented, cheerful… wonderful. I have never met anyone like her. Compared to her I am so painfully average. If only she would… I should say something. Hah, I keep thinking that, yet I never do. But perhaps today…
She turns her head, and our eyes meet. My heart can’t decide if it wants to leap out of my chest, or just stop dead. She smiles, a genuine one reflected in those deep blue eyes. One might think blue eyes would be cold, but hers are soft and enveloping, like a warm ocean I want to sink into. I smile back, even though I’m aware it probably looks goofy. Then I realise I’ve been staring. Again.
[A/N: This was one of those ideas that come to me when I can’t sleep in the middle of the night/early morning. Not stuff I’d normally write, but that I just have to give a go anyway.]
“Good morning, Riri~” Mari’s perky voice rang out.
“Good morning, Mari-san,” Riko said as calmly as she could. For Riko felt like she was constantly flustered around Mari these days.
It had started with Yoshiko. She had been the first to call Riko ‘Riri’, for whatever reason. Maybe she thought it was poetic, or dramatic, or something. It was sometimes hard to get what was going on in Yoshiko’s mind.
[A/N: Aaaahhh, this one ambushed me! After getting Ruby’s story ready to go for her birthday, I looked up when the next one would be, and found Riko to be two days before! So I barely had time to brainstorm, much less plan. I’m so sorry for it being short and kinda shitty, Riko. You deserve better. Happy birthday, you poor pervert.]
“So why did we have to come up to the roof?” Riko asked. The two of them had practically dragged her up here. She hadn’t even managed to grab her lunch.
Chika and You exchanged glances and smiled. “Because…” You said.
“We have a present for you!” Chika eagerly finished.
“You couldn’t have waited until after school?” Riko asked. The door finally closed behind them. It was a bit slow. The three of them moved off to the side.
It was Riko’s birthday, so she wasn’t surprised they had gotten her something. She would have been upset if they didn’t. But the party wasn’t until this afternoon.
